How to Successfully Connect Your Robot Vacuum Cleaners to Wi-Fi?

For a smart robot vacuum cleaner with Wi-Fi connectivity, we believe that most consumers may meet some challenges when connecting it to Wi-Fi. Today we summarized the most useful tips and solutions for helping your robot vacuum cleaner connect to Wi-Fi easily, and listed some things you should do after a successful Wi-Fi connection.

8 Tips to Prepare Your Robot Vacuum Cleaner for A Successful Wi-Fi Connection

1. Make sure your robot vacuum cleaner has enough power

Check the battery status indicator. There will be a battery power indicator light on most of the robot vacuum cleaners, which shows the current battery status. Different colors stand for different battery power levels; for example, orange stands for low battery power level while red stands for critically low battery level. Please check this on your product from the user manual.

Sufficiently charge your robot vacuum cleaner after you receive it. The battery power of your robot vacuum cleaner may be drained due to long-term storage or transportation. We suggest that you charge it for at least 1 hour, then power it on. When it is getting charged, check whether there is power coming from the electrical outlet. If there is no power for this outlet, please change to another one. No matter when the robot vacuum cleaner is getting charged or after it gets charged, you can start the Wi-Fi connection anytime you want.

Check if there is one power switch on the robot vacuum cleaner. After charging, please also check if your robot vacuum cleaner has a power switch (see the user manual). If it has one, do not forget to turn it on before starting.

2. Know the Wi-Fi connection status of your robot vacuum cleaner

There is also a Wi-Fi status indicator light on the robot vacuum cleaner. Its flashing speed and color indicate the corresponding Wi-Fi connection status. You should know this information from the user manual before you begin the Wi-Fi connection.

Taking Kyvol Cybovac E-Series robot vacuum cleaner as an example, the Wi-Fi status indicator light and connection status refer to the chart below:

Wi-Fi Status Indicator LightWi-Fi Connection Status
Quick blue flashRead for Wi-Fi connection via Standard Mode
Slow blue flashReady for Wi-Fi connection via AP Mode
Solid blueWi-Fi connected

When the Kyvol Cybovac robot vacuum cleaner is ready for Wi-Fi connection via Standard Mode, the Wi-Fi status indicator light on the device flashes blue quickly; when ready for Wi-Fi connection via AP Mode, the Wi-Fi status indicator light flashes blue slowly; after the Wi-Fi is connected successfully, the Wi-Fi status indicator light will turn solid blue.

3. Set up the band frequency of your router

The popular 802.11ac wireless routers available in the market now have both 2.4GHz and 5GHz band frequencies. After you bought a new router, please set different names for these two frequencies in the Wi-Fi settings of your router.

Most robot vacuum cleaners are not compatible with 5GHz band frequency but only support 2.4GHz. So, if you choose a Wi-Fi network with the wrong band frequency, the Wi-Fi connection would be failed. And if you have been using an old router that only has a 2.4GHz band frequency, you should pay attention to choose the model that supports 2.4GHz when purchasing a robot vacuum cleaner.

4. Pay attention to the Wi-Fi name(SSID) and password of your router

Make sure you have chosen the right Wi-Fi SSID(name) when connecting your robot vacuum cleaner to your router’s Wi-Fi.

If your router is with dual-band frequency, and your robot vacuum cleaner only supports a 2.4GHz band frequency, please pay special attention to choosing the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. This is a key point!

For the Wi-Fi name(SSID) and password of your router, you should avoid using special characters (including spaces, periods, dashes, underscores, etc.) or emojis in them. The reason is that some robot vacuum cleaners may not correctly parse the special characters and emoji, thus leading to the failure of the Wi-Fi connection. Therefore, a combination of English letters and digits is recommended.

If you use some spaces in your Wi-Fi password, please be very careful when you input the password. Do not input extra spaces in any part of the password, especially at the end of it.

When you input the English letters for your Wi-Fi password, please pay much attention to the lowercase and uppercase letters. Auto-capitalization is applied in most of the input methods. *Show the password when you input it to avoid a typo.

Do not hide your Wi-Fi network; otherwise, the robot vacuum cleaner cannot find your router’s Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi name(SSID) must be visible and recognizable by the mobile device.

5. Grant the necessary permissions required by the apps

Generally, most apps in the market now request the permissions of GPS location services, Bluetooth, Camera, Contact, etc., after you launch or use them on iOS or Android systems.

Take the Kyvol app as an example.

When you first launch the app, it requests to access your GPS location services for Android devices following Google Play’s Location Permissions policy; while for the iOS devices, it will not request any permission. When you are using the Kyvol app, it will request to access your location services or Bluetooth for Wi-Fi connection, access your camera for taking photos and access the album for changing profile photos for both iOS and Android systems.

If you are unwilling to upload the profile photo or take photos, please “Don’t Allow” the requests, which will not affect the functions. On the contrary, if you don’t allow the app to access your GPS location services or the Bluetooth, the Wi-Fi connection would be failed.

Therefore, granting the necessary permissions required by the apps is recommended.

6. Keep the distance of router, robot vacuum cleaner, and mobile device close enough

Keep them in the same room.

Closer the distance between them, the more stable the Wi-Fi connection.

7. Check the expiration date of your internet plan

This tip is easily ignored by the consumers. Please check when your internet plan expires from your wireless internet contract. If it expires, your router’s Wi-Fi will be not available and the Wi-Fi connection would fail. Renew or extend the contract with your internet provider in time.

8. Follow the in-app instructions

Most apps in the market provide detailed in-app instructions, and you can follow them to make the Wi-Fi connection. If the Wi-Fi connection fails, the apps would also remind you of trying other solutions. Please carefully read and strictly follow these instructions.

Solutions for the Failure of Wi-Fi Connection after You Tried All 8 Tips

Solution 1: Restart the robot vacuum cleaner and your router

We have to admit that restarting seems to fix most device problems.

For the robot vacuum cleaner, please power off and unplug it, wait for 30 seconds, then plug it back, and power it on.

For restarting your router, please unplug your router, wait for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.

After waiting for another 2 minutes, try to connect the robot vacuum cleaner to your router’s Wi-Fi from the very beginning.

Solution 2: Connect the robot vacuum cleaner to your router’s Wi-Fi via the robot’s hotspot

Some models in the market may provide more than one connection mode to connect your robot vacuum cleaner to your router’s Wi-Fi. That’s because there is one built-in Wi-Fi module for most robots. It will create a private hotspot that has no internet connection.

The name of this connection mode varies depending on different manufacturers and you can check it from the user manual. Some may call the mode as AP Mode or EZ mode, so please try to connect the robot vacuum cleaner to your router’s Wi-Fi via this mode.

In this mode, you need to connect your mobile device to the hotspot of the robot vacuum cleaner in your Wi-Fi list, then connect to your router’s Wi-Fi(some devices may be in reverse order). The name of the hotspot generally consists of BRAND-XXXXXX, which can be easily found. After connecting, please ignore the exclamation mark before this hotspot and do not change to another network.

This Wi-Fi connection mode provides a better chance of success!

Solution 3: Connect your robot vacuum cleaner to the hotspot of another mobile device, not your router’s Wi-Fi

If you are not sure whether your router’s Wi-Fi is working or not, please enable the hotspot of another mobile device and connect the robot vacuum cleaner to this hotspot to have a check. If the robot vacuum cleaner can be connected to another mobile device’s hotspot, your router has a network issue. You should ask for help from the seller of your router.

Solution 4: Read the user manual carefully from the very beginning

Some consumers hate reading user manuals. However, for these types of products with Wi-Fi connectivity, this step cannot be skipped. Do read the user manual to check if you’ve missed some important tips. Then strictly follow the manual to connect your robot vacuum cleaner to the Wi-Fi again.

Solution 5: Contact the Customer Care Team

If you have tried all the former solutions and the Wi-Fi issue is still unresolved, please contact the manufacturer of the robot vacuum cleaner to get the right solution.

4 Things You Should Do After A Successful Wi-Fi Connection

1. Reset or delete your robot vacuum cleaner from the app when the Wi-Fi connection is abnormal. If you have successfully connected the robot to your router’s Wi-Fi, but it shows offline on your app, or there is another network issue for the app, please try to reset the robot vacuum cleaner or delete the robot vacuum cleaner from the app. Then connect it to your router’s Wi-Fi again from the very beginning.

2. Always check the Wi-Fi connection on the app and the robot’s location. Sometimes when the robot vacuum cleaner gets stuck, the battery power would be drained quickly, then the Wi-Fi connection on the app would be abnormal. Please find your robot to get it charged.

3. Update in time when there is a newer version of the app or the firmware. The manufacturers may regularly update their apps or device’s firmware to fix some bugs or make improvements. Please update when there is a reminder in the apps for a better experience.

4. Make sure no one changes the password of your router’s Wi-Fi. If your family member has changed the password of Wi-Fi, you need to reconnect your robot vacuum cleaner to your router’s Wi-Fi.
